How to resize an image for Instagram

  1. 01

    Open it in the editor

Add a photo or design to the StokX editor. It can be a product shot, a cut-out from Remove Background, a studio photo or anything else you've made in the app.

  2. 02

    Pick a size

Tap Resize and choose Square 1:1, Portrait 4:5, Story 9:16 or Landscape 16:9. The page changes shape and everything on it is fitted to the new frame. Original returns to the photo's own shape.

  3. 03

    Save and post

Tap Save to put the resized image in your Photos, then post it to Instagram, TikTok or wherever it's going. Need another shape too? Resize again and save a second copy.

Five presets, no typing

Original, Square 1:1, Portrait 4:5, Story 9:16 and Landscape 16:9 cover feed posts, Stories, Reels, TikTok and wide banners. There are no pixel fields to fill in; you pick the shape and the page follows.

Instagram sizes at a glance

Feed square: 1080 × 1080 (1:1). Feed portrait: 1080 × 1350 (4:5). Stories and Reels: 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Landscape: 1080 × 566 (1.91:1). TikTok: 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Match the ratio and the whole picture shows.

Mind the 3:4 profile grid

Since 2025, the Instagram profile grid previews posts in a 3:4 crop, which 1080 × 1440 fills exactly. StokX has no 3:4 preset, but a 4:5 post loses only a sliver at each side, so keep key details in the center.

Fitted, not chopped

When you switch shapes, your design is scaled to fit inside the new frame instead of being cut off at the edges. Then pinch to make the product bigger, or move it where you want it.

AI Photoshoot sizes to match

AI Photoshoot renders in 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 too, so model shots come out shaped for a square post, a portrait post or a Story, with no resizing needed afterward.

Free with the editor

Resize sits in the free StokX editor next to Text, Backgrounds and Shadows. Try every shape before you save; it costs no coins, and you can switch as often as you like.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Instagram?

For most feed posts, 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait). It fills more of the screen than a square and loses only a sliver in the 3:4 profile grid. Use 1080 × 1080 for square posts, 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels, and 1080 × 566 for landscape. In StokX, that's Portrait 4:5, Square 1:1 and Story 9:16.

What sizes does the StokX resizer offer?

Five: Original, Square 1:1, Portrait 4:5, Story 9:16 and Landscape 16:9. Original keeps the shape of the photo you started from. The rest match Instagram square and portrait posts, Stories, Reels and TikTok, and wide banners. Pick one and the page changes shape, with your design scaled to fit.

Is the Instagram image resizer free?

Yes. Resize is free in the StokX app, like the rest of the photo editor: Text, Backgrounds, Shadows, filters and Remove Background. It uses no coins and doesn't need StokX Pro, so you can make every size of the same post at no cost.

Can I resize an image for TikTok?

Yes. TikTok uses 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 ratio, the same as Instagram Stories and Reels. Choose Story 9:16 in Resize, save, and the picture fills the screen on both apps. Keep text and faces away from the bottom and right edges, where each app puts its buttons.

Why does Instagram crop my photos?

Usually because the photo's shape doesn't match a post format. A very tall or very wide image is trimmed to fit, and since 2025 the profile grid also previews every post in a 3:4 crop. Resize to Portrait 4:5 or Square 1:1 before posting, and keep faces, products and text near the center.

Can I post a 16:9 image on Instagram?

Yes. A 16:9 image posts in the feed as a landscape photo, though it shows smaller than a square or portrait post. Instagram's own landscape size is 1080 × 566, a 1.91:1 ratio that's a little wider than 16:9. Landscape 16:9 is also the shape for YouTube thumbnails and website banners.

Where can I resize images with StokX?

In your browser at stokx.online/editor, or in the StokX app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Add a photo, tap Resize and pick 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9. In the browser your photo never leaves your device; the first download is free, then web Pro gives you unlimited downloads.
